What is TENS Certification?

When you’re preparing for birth, it’s completely normal to wonder what will actually help in the moment. There are so many options out there, and it can feel hard to know what’s worth considering. One of the tools I offer as part of my support is a TENS unit, and for many of my clients, it ends up being a really helpful piece of their labor experience.

What is TENS?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It’s a small, simple device that uses gentle pulses through pads placed on your back. During labor, those pulses can help create a different kind of sensation for your body to focus on, which some people find takes the edge off contractions, especially in early labor. It’s not overwhelming or complicated, and once you understand how it works, it can feel like a really empowering tool to have on hand.

How TENS can support you:

As a TENS-certified doula, I’ll walk you through how to use the unit and help you decide when it might be most helpful during your labor. You’re always in control of it, and I’m there to guide and support you as you figure out what feels best for your body.

TENS is just one of many comfort measures we can use together. We might also incorporate breathing, movement, position changes, and hands-on support like counter pressure. My role is to stay present with you, help you adjust as things change, and make sure you feel supported every step of the way.

Why some people love it as an option:

One thing I hear often is that it feels good to have options going into labor. TENS can give you something to focus on and something you can actively use as contractions build. For some moms, that sense of involvement makes a big difference in how they experience labor.

Even if its not something you use the entire time, just knowing its there can bring a little more peace of mind. My goal is always to help you feel calm, informed, and supported as you move through your birth. I am not a medical provider, and I dont offer medical care or treatment. TENS is simply one of the non-medical comfort tools I bring into your space as part of doula support.

If you have specific questions about whether TENS is a good fit for you, I always encourage you to talk with your healthcare provider so you feel fully confident in your plan.
